OUR HISTORY

CHEF JOHN WONG
FOUNDER OF PHỞ HOÀNG

In the 1970s, Flushing was just starting out as a small Chinatown, with only a handful of businesses compared to the present day Flushing. I have always been passionate about good food, as my standards were instilled through my eating habits with my father as a child in Vietnam. However, coming as a Vietnamese-Cantonese immigrant to a culturally non-Asian neighborhood, it was difficult to find restaurants that suited my taste and standards.

More and more Asian immigrants began to arrive in the 1990s, and I realized I had an opportunity to create a community for people like me - people who acknowledge the importance of good, homemade food. So, I began building Phở Hoàng in order to provide Flushing with a special place to enjoy authentic phở and Cantonese BBQ, finally opening the restaurant in early 1997.
